If you are craving bold Mexican food in South Plainfield, NJ, Casa Romero Mexican Grill is the spot you do not want to sleep on. The place is vibrant, lively and filled with the kind of food that shows up sizzling, cheesy and loaded with flavor. Add in strong cocktails and a fun crowd, and you have a go to Mexican restaurant in Middlesex County.

This is not minimal, dainty food. This is “come hungry and leave in a food coma” type energy.

Kicking Things Off: The Molcajete That Steals the Show

We started with their massive molcajete, and it set the tone immediately.

It comes out bubbling hot, filled with:

  • Melted cheese

  • Shrimp

  • Steak

  • Sauce

  • And a mix of toppings that basically count as a full meal

You scoop from the stone bowl, load up your tortillas and instantly realize this is not your average appetizer. It is smoky, cheesy, rich and perfect for sharing… or not sharing, honestly.

Tableside Moment: 20-Ounce Bistec de Lomo

Next up was the tableside star: the 20 ounce bistec de lomo, a Mexican style sirloin steak.

It is:

  • Big

  • Tender

  • Smoky

  • And absolutely worth the hype

Cooked to that perfect point where it is still juicy but has a proper char, it lands on the table like a main character. If you love steak and want something with Mexican flavor instead of standard steakhouse vibes, this is your move.

Stuffed Pineapple, Shrimp and All the Extras

The hits kept rolling from there.

The piña gratinada – a cheesy, stuffed pineapple filled with chorizo – is one of those dishes you order once and then think about later. Sweet, salty, cheesy and baked, it walks that perfect line between fun and over the top in the best way.

The camarones al ajillo bring balance back with garlicky shrimp full of flavor but not overly heavy. If you like seafood and garlic, this is one of those simple but elite dishes.

Of course, we had to go in on the street style elote, loaded with all the classics, and some homemade guacamole to keep dipping between bites. Both are musts at a spot like this.

Do not skip the sopes, either. Thick, fluffy tortillas with toppings piled on – savory meat, sauce and cheese – basically handheld comfort.

Dessert: Crème Brûlée and Churros To Close It Out

Casa Romero does not tap out on dessert. We finished with their homemade crème brûlée, silky and creamy with that caramelized top you crack with a spoon, and warm churros that hit every craving for cinnamon, sugar and fried dough. It is the kind of ending that makes you forget for a second how full you are.
